The Super Bowl is Within Reach for the Los Angeles Rams

The Los Angeles Rams currently hold an 11–3 record, putting them at the top of the NFC standings. Anyone who still doubts this team is elite hasn’t been paying attention. That record reflects LA’s ability to dominate games consistently. Quarterback Matthew Stafford has thrown for a league-high 37 touchdowns this season with just five interceptions. He’s playing like a quarterback in his prime. At 37 years old, this is a historic season for Stafford. He’s the heart of this team, keeps defenses on edge and inspires confidence in everyone around him. Stafford has a 113.1 passer rating this season, placing him among the league leaders. Watching him dissect defenses with precision makes it clear that he’s the kind of quarterback you want leading your team when the playoffs are just around the corner. His ability to stay calm under pressure and make quick decisions is exactly what the Rams need to win. Wide receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams rank among the NFL’s best duos in recept...

From Walk-On to Winner: Jake DiMichele’s Journey at Duquesne

Image
PITTSBURGH -- Jake DiMichele remembers the moment his season ended as if it were yesterday. It was cold January morning, midseason, at Duquesne University when he walked into practice and felt a pain in his foot that refused to go away. A few weeks earlier, he had broken a bone in his foot, but he had hoped to play through it. That day, he thought it was over. “I told everyone, told the trainers, and that’s when they sent me back to the doctor,” DiMichele recalled. “They basically told me we were probably going to shut it down for the rest of the year. It was a tough feeling because I thought I could make a difference. The silver lining was that I could get the year back as a redshirt. That gave me some hope, but it was still hard not being out there.” For someone whose basketball journey had been defined by relentless effort, that injury stung. It also revealed his patience, determination and love for the game. These are qualities his coaches, teammates and family had seen in h...

The Stress and Joy of Closing Chapters: What We Can Learn from Aidan Mack

PITTSBURGH -- Research shows that final exams are a major source of stress for American college students. Students surveyed at Duquesne University report a wide range of coping mechanisms to manage finals week stress. One student, who requested to remain anonymous, said, “I’m a psychology major so I understand unhealthy coping mechanisms but that doesn’t mean I haven’t used them. Some people use substances, some people overeat… at this point, I’m just looking for inspiration to help me push through and close the chapter on this school year.” Multiple Dukes referenced needing inspiration or motivation to get through this week, and they need look no farther than fellow student Aidan Mack of Erie. In 2020, Mack, a DU freshman, was a soccer standout at Mercyhurst Prep. When injured in a preseason scrimmage, Mack went to the Emergency Room. Testing included bloodwork that revealed something he never expected: he had acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a blood cancer.   Thus began a...

Should Parents Decide The Fate of Their Own Child's Gender?

PITTSBURGH—Medical advancements in fertility have allowed people with difficulty conceiving children to become parents. Techniques such as in vitro fertilization provide an opportunity to select which fetuses, including which gender, are implanted. This has led to ethical questions on whether parents should be allowed to choose the gender of their child. The practice is already in use for medical reasons since certain genetic conditions are prevalent in one gender over another. The debate tends to arise in considering the practice for social reasons, such as gender preference. I asked several people in the Pittsburgh area whether gender selection should be the choice of parents. Many people interviewed felt gender selection should not be left to parents, though they cited different reasons for their opposition. Max Nicolussi, a 19-year-old student at Duquesne University was clear with his position on this hot topic. “I feel like if I was a parent, I would not choose for th...
